If you’ve read our
history, you know that a physician’s outreach for one
cancer patient unofficially launched the Look Good…Feel Better
program in 1987. That doctor “prescribed” a professional
makeover for a female patient experiencing severe appearance-related
side effects and related depression. The woman’s outlook and
emotional approach toward treatment were profoundly improved: just
what the doctor had ordered.
In fact, many medical experts today recognize
the vital role of cancer support programs like LGFB in the patient
treatment process. Significant data
suggests a strong link between women’s participation in such
programs and rates of recovery. However, according to a 1998
Roper Study, many patients are not aware of these important
programs. Furthermore, many oncologists believe that they and their
institutions are not fully equipped to answer the many non-medical
needs of patients in cancer treatment.
That’s where you come in. By displaying
brochures in your office, referring patients to LGFB offerings,
or even hosting a group program in your office, you can help provide
an invaluable service to patients — and the entire community.
We invite you to:
- Find out more about LGFB on this Web site.
(See Facts for a quick overview.)
- Order informational
materials to promote LGFB to patients. (LGFB is offered in
all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico: see Program
Finder.)
- Consider working with your local American Cancer
Society office to start up a group program
if LGFB isn’t already in your local area.
- Contact us by phone (1-800-395-LOOK) or email
with any questions. Or call your local American
Cancer Society office.
