2bMe.org Becomes Featured Web Site on
STARBRIGHT Foundation’s STARBRIGHT World

Access to Private Online Network Helps More Teens with Serious Illnesses Cope

Washington, D.C. – The Look Good…Feel Better® for Teens Web site, www.2bMe.org, has been added to the STARBRIGHT Foundation’s private online network for seriously ill children, STARBRIGHT World. Now young people accessing the STARBRIGHT World community from home or from one of 97 participating hospitals will be able to visit www.2bMe.org, a special Web site designed to help teens with cancer cope with the challenges caused by their disease.

STARBRIGHT World is designed to address the isolation and loneliness of seriously ill children and teens whether in the hospital or in the home. Formal research studies and anecdotal evidence underscore that the program has delivered powerful benefits for the children who participate. STARBRIGHT World provides tools such as chat rooms, bulletin boards, weekly contests and activities, email, video-conferencing, medical information in kid-friendly terms and secure access to select Web sites.

Based on the Look Good…Feel Better for Teens program which was developed with the help of child psychologists, nutritionists, social workers and other medical professionals, 2bMe.org provides users the option to explore the different challenges caused by their disease on their own terms. Divided into four main areas — “About Face,” “Head Way,” “Health Esteem” and “Social Circles” — topics include skincare, nutrition advice and information on social issues relevant to teens.

“In the hospitals where STARBRIGHT World is available, 2bMe.org will now be immediately accessible to teens during the two times when they are usually the most frightened or curious about what’s happening to them: when they are recently diagnosed or when they are required to go into the hospital for a period of time,” said Lynn Hardesty, social worker at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

“We want to give as many teens as possible a chance to learn more about the appearance-related effects of cancer treatment without making them feel self-conscious about asking questions,” explains Carolyn Deaver, vice president of the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation and the Look Good...Feel Better program. “Working with STARBRIGHT World and child life specialists will help bring the positive, non-medical messages of 2bMe.org to the attention of even more teens, their families and the medical community.”

“The STARBRIGHT Foundation is proud to add 2bMe.org to STARBRIGHT World’s 650 Web sites that are provided to children and teens at home and in the hospital,” said Nancy Hayes, CEO of the STARBRIGHT Foundation. “We look for Web sites to offer appropriate, engaging, interactive and accurate content, and 2bMe.org most certainly fits this profile.”
